What sub setup would sound good?

I listen to a wide variety of music such as...dub step, death metal, rap and so on. Would a 15" sub with a ported probox and a 2000w mono block amp sound good? I'm wondering bc I have a friend that has a 15 and when I put on rock music it just sounds like crap but it slams with rap and sounds excellent.
